博奕理論英文名是：「Game Theory」，是應用數學的一個分支，最早是由Mr. John Von Neumann 和 Osaka Morgenstern 在1944年合著的書中提出這一概念，書名叫「Theory of Games and Economic Behavior」。
Game一詞的意思不僅指賭局，也指「事件」，研究的是自私而十分理性的人，在參與一個賭局，或一個事件時，在設定的前提下，參與的雙方或多方，根據各自的利益，也考慮到參與的對方或其它方可能作出的反應，而選擇對自己最佳的策略，進而推論各方各自採取對自身最佳策略而行動後「事件」最後演變的結果。
博奕論專家John Nash還獲得1998年諾貝爾獎。上面的一段話實在是十分難理解，說得再簡單一些，博奕論研究的是自私 (假定人都是自私的) 而理性的人 (不帶主觀的情感)，在特定環境下在分析了對他們個人的利弊之後可能採取的對應行動，所以博奕論是一種行為科學，而所謂自私而理性的人，也可以是一家公司，或一個機構，因此在政治學中也得到廣泛的應用。
我很喜歡讀博奕論一類的書，它有趣的地方就是故事就發生在我們的日常生活中，我們常常耳聞目賭，但不去思考故事背後的因果邏輯，一旦我們懂得了那一套邏輯思維的方法，很多時候，祇要我們知道了設定的條件，參與各方的背景、利害關係，我們可以相當正確地預計結果，這可以提升我們的能力，處理好從工作到人際關係的一系列問題。博奕理論是實用性很強的，大家接觸了以後，自己就能體會。
